“How are we supposed to talk, kiddo?”
“Nicely,” she replies.
“That means we don’t whine. We use our big girl voices.”
16.97 seconds later
“Would you like a do-over or do you need a break to remember how to talk nicely?”
“A do-over.”
“Okay, try saying it again nicely.”
Lather.
Rinse.
Repeat.
This is gonna pay off, right?
Do you find yourself feeling like a broken record lately? If so, about what?

Oh my word!! We are having this exact problem with Claire who is almost 2 1/2. Everything comes out SO whiney its driving me crazy. One day it WILL pay off, and we won’t have whiney 5yr olds – at least that’s what I keep telling myself. Nice to know I’m not alone.
I’ve really enjoyed reading your blog by the way!
Glad to know I’m not the only one as well. And thanks; I’m glad you’re enjoying it.
Lately?? Try the last 12 years!
– uh, regarding everything! They KNOW, they just love to hear our voices that. much. Year. After. Year.
You crack me up Kerry. And you’re supposed to say, “Oh yeah, I did that and now when my older kids talk it’s all rainbows, butterflies and unicorns.”
Hahahaha
My 19-month old has taken to whining and whimpering when she wants something. She knows plenty of words and can point. I try to pause and say “ask for what you want?” But when I’m exhausted, and she starts in, I just start lobbing toys and food and hugs at her. We are a work in progress for sure.
“I just start lobbing toys and food and hugs at her.” This made me laugh. Been there, done that.
