Each night before we leave our daughter’s room, we count to ten. This allows her to more easily transition to us leaving because she knows what to expect. But it also helped her learn to count to ten. And because kiddos are notoriously creative at getting you to stay put at bedtime, she asked us to do it again using our fingers. If we were both in the room she wanted us to both do it – so she learned to count to 20. Then she wanted our fingers to disappear, so she’s learned to count backwards from 10.

Learning happens best when motivation is high. And I cherish the moments my daughter is highly motivated to keep me lingering instead of kicking me out.

  1. I love this! Olivia is really into counting right now too! I’m afraid I’m kind of all business when it comes to bedtime. I need to linger a little more. With three to get down, I sort of get into this, “hurry up and get them to bed so I can have some quiet mode.” Sigh…I know I’ll regret that someday.

    • It’s easy for me to get into hurry up mode too. I’ve been trying to start the bedtime routine a little earlier so I don’t feel rushed.

  2. How cute! I think she has found a way to keep you guys in her room and delay bedtime just a tad bit longer ;) Next thing you know you’ll be counting your toes!

  3. What a great idea, thanks for sharing. :)
